Why Tabless Batteries Receive So Much Praise

The favorable view has a sound engineering basis. A conventional cylindrical cell carries current through discrete tabs attached to its wound electrode material. A tabless cell distributes that connection across more of the electrode structure, reducing internal resistance.

Lower resistance can reduce energy lost as heat and help a battery maintain voltage while delivering high current. That matters when a cordless tool draws heavily for an extended period. Less voltage sag can mean less bogging, while lower heat generation can delay thermal throttling or shutdown.

Enthusiast coverage has reported noticeable benefits from tabless packs in table saws, blowers, and reciprocating saws. ToolGuyd’s account of the 8Ah PowerPack also describes less bogging in demanding equipment and calls the technology impressive (field assessment).

DeWalt’s product claims reinforce that view. The DCB2108 8Ah XR PowerPack was introduced with a claim of 50% more power and longer life. The forthcoming DCB6112 FlexVolt 12Ah is claimed to provide 50% more power and 50% longer charge-cycle life than the DCB612.

Those claims make tabless a credible upgrade for users who repeatedly push a pack to its electrical or thermal limits. The consensus is right about the underlying technology and about its potential in sustained-load tools.

The overreach is treating that potential as an across-the-board tool upgrade. The cited demonstrations concern sustained-load equipment, not drills. The flagship favorable coverage presents no drill test data at all.

A Drill Rarely Reaches the Limiting Condition

Routine drilling and fastening are intermittent. Pulling the trigger creates a current spike, but releasing it between holes or screws gives the battery time to recover and shed heat. That duty cycle differs sharply from running a table saw through repeated cuts or holding a blower at full output.

A healthy conventional pack can already provide all the current many drilling jobs request. Raising the battery’s output ceiling cannot improve performance when the drill’s electronics, motor, gearing, bit, material, or operator technique sets the limit instead.

Difficult drilling can move closer to tabless territory. Repeated large holes, aggressive hole saw work, thick masonry, and other prolonged operations can create sustained demand. Even there, a slowdown does not prove that the battery is responsible. A dull or unsuitable bit, excessive feed pressure, heat in the tool, or the drill’s own current limit can produce similar symptoms.

That distinction separates runtime from performance. One 5Ah pack could maintain higher tool speed through demanding work without containing more nominal charge. Another could run for a similar period at lower output. A valid comparison must define the tool, accessory, material, duty cycle, starting temperature, battery condition, and cutoff point.

No such controlled drill comparison is available for the DCB2105. Claims that it will make an ordinary drill faster or run materially longer therefore go beyond the supplied evidence.

The DCB2105 Makes Sense Only at the Right Price

The DCB2105 XR 5Ah uses tabless 18650 cylindrical cells. Reporting describes it as approximately the same size and weight as the familiar conventional 5Ah pack and says it was intended to replace the 5Ah PowerStack. The 1.7Ah and 3.5Ah PowerStack models were expected to remain.

That familiar profile could make the DCB2105 convenient on a drill. It avoids the short, wide shape of the 5Ah PowerStack while potentially offering greater high-current capability than the standard 5Ah pack.

Convenience is not the same as a drilling-performance gain. The available report did not provide finalized pricing or controlled application results. If the DCB2105 reaches stores at roughly the same price as a conventional 5Ah, choosing the newer design can be reasonable because the additional output headroom costs little. If it carries a substantial premium, a drill user has no measured benefit with which to recover that difference.

A second conventional pack can provide a more concrete advantage: one pack can charge while the other works, and the extra stored capacity extends the time available before both need charging. Whether that option costs less depends on live retail and kit pricing, which the supplied evidence does not establish.

The DCB6112 Is Built for FlexVolt Loads, Not Drill Balance

The DCB6112 is a tabless FlexVolt 12Ah battery compatible with 20V MAX and FlexVolt 60V MAX tools. It has the same stated 12Ah capacity as the existing DCB612.

Its reported weight is 3.34 pounds, compared with 3.4 pounds for the DCB612. That 0.06-pound difference is negligible as a purchase reason. Either pack is substantial on a handheld 20V drill, where total weight and balance matter more than a small difference between two large batteries.

DeWalt’s 50% power claim also needs its full qualification. The figure describes available battery power under the manufacturer’s test, not a 50% increase in drilling speed, holes per charge, or completed work. ToolGuyd specifically reports that the claim is “not necessarily in application.”

The 50% longer-life claim refers to charge cycles. It does not mean 50% longer runtime from one charge, and the cited reporting does not provide independent aging data that can be converted into years of service for an individual owner.

The clearest case for the DCB6112 is thermal endurance in demanding FlexVolt equipment. Coverage identifies DeWalt’s cordless snowblower as an example where the older 12Ah pack could overheat. That continuous, high-output load is unlike ordinary drill use.

The 8Ah PowerPack Fits Saws Better Than Compact Drills

DeWalt introduced the DCB2108 8Ah XR PowerPack in 2024 as its first 20V MAX battery using tabless cells. Its announced price was $229, although that historical launch figure is not evidence of its present street price (DeWalt announcement).

The DCB2108 combines substantial capacity with high-current capability. That pairing is defensible on a circular saw, grinder, reciprocating saw, or other demanding 20V MAX tool where a healthy smaller pack bogs, heats up, or requires disruptive changes.

Its capacity and physical size can work against it on a drill, particularly during overhead or one-handed work. Platform compatibility only establishes that the battery can power the tool; it does not establish that the pairing is balanced or economical.

PowerPack also does not make PowerStack obsolete. PowerStack uses pouch cells rather than tabless cylindrical cells, and its shape may remain preferable on particular tools. Neither construction is universally superior without model-specific tests.

Buy Tabless When the Battery Is the Proven Constraint

A tabless purchase is strongest when all three conditions are present: the workload is sustained and demanding, a healthy current pack shows a repeatable limitation, and the live premium is acceptable.

Document the limitation before spending. Use a suitable, sharp accessory and repeat the same task with a freshly charged pack. Look for recurring loss of speed, unusually high battery temperature, throttling, shutdowns, or battery changes that interrupt useful work.

Table saws, blowers, reciprocating saws, grinders, repeated heavy cutting, and demanding FlexVolt equipment create the most credible conditions. The cited field evidence reports benefits in that class of tool, although it does not provide one universal percentage improvement.

Routine drilling, screwdriving, impact-driver bursts, radios, and lights sit on the other side. For those applications, prioritize capacity, handling, pack condition, and price. There Is No Evidence-Based Universal Premium

The available reporting does not establish a dollar or percentage threshold at which tabless becomes worthwhile. DCB2105 and DCB6112 pricing was not finalized in the cited coverage, and current promotions or kit economics can change the comparison.

The draft’s $30 example is only an illustration, not a reported market premium. If a tabless pack costs $30 more and produces no measurable drilling improvement, that entire $30 buys unused headroom. If the same premium repeatedly prevents interruptions in a revenue-producing saw or blower, it may be defensible.

Compare the exact packs you would otherwise buy. Include capacity, live standalone price, useful kit contents, charger needs, warranty terms, dimensions, and balance on the intended tool. Historical launch pricing should not substitute for that comparison.

For a drill-only buyer, the default remains the conventional pack. Choose the DCB2105 instead when its live price is close enough that the extra headroom is effectively incidental, not because tabless construction has been shown to improve ordinary drilling.
