Find the Bit That Matches Your Hole, Tool, and Material

Verify the cutting diameter, material application, bit category, shank fit, and usable drilling depth before buying.

Choose a 5/16-inch drill bit only when 5/16 inch is the cutting diameter, the bit category and stated application match the workpiece, the shank fits your tool, and the usable drilling depth is sufficient. If a product page does not clearly confirm all five points, choose another listing.

Write down these requirements before comparing products:

  • Desired cutting diameter: 5/16 inch
  • Workpiece material: Wood, aluminum, steel, stainless steel, concrete, or another specific material

Confirm what the 5/16-inch measurement describes

On the retailer page, 5/16 inch was the active bit-diameter filter. Shank diameter, drilling depth, and length appeared as separate attributes. These measurements describe different parts or capabilities of a bit:

  • Cutting diameter is the nominal size of the hole the bit is intended to cut.
  • Shank diameter and style describe the section held by or connected to the tool.
  • Drilling depth or usable cutting length indicates how deeply the cutting portion can work.
  • Overall length includes sections that may remain outside the workpiece.

It also says nothing about whether the cutting portion is long enough for the required hole.

Open the individual product page before buying. Check its specification table and dimension diagram, making sure that “5/16 inch” is explicitly attached to the bit or cutting diameter—not to the shank, a drive interface, or another nearby measurement.

Do not substitute an unverified decimal or metric size. Likewise, do not treat 5/16 inch as a pilot-hole, clearance-hole, or tap-drill recommendation without a technical reference covering the exact fastener, thread, and workpiece material. A nominal bit diameter and an application-specific hole recommendation are separate decisions.

Filter by the job, then remove unrelated accessories

For wood or metal, a twist bit may be an appropriate category to investigate, but its construction and stated application still matter.
